Mouthguards to Protect Your Teeth

sportsguards at Noreen Goldwire DDS Sports are a great activity for people of all ages. However, many types of sports pose a risk of injury. These injuries include such things as colliding with other players, falling, or being hit with a ball or other piece of equipment. Wearing the proper protective gear is essential for preventing serious injuries. Often this gear includes body padding and a helmet. There is one other piece of equipment you should also consider. At Noreen Goldwire, DDS Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we can provide you with a custom fit mouthguard.

What is a Mouthguard?

A mouthguard is an oral device that is worn over your teeth when you play sports. It covers your top teeth and is designed to provide cushioning in the event of an impact, helping to protect your teeth, your jawbone, and your oral tissues.

What Types of Mouthguards Are There?

There are several different types of mouthguards.
•  Stock. Stock mouthguards can be found in just about any sporting goods store. They are the least expensive type of mouthguard. However, they are pre-molded. This means that they may not fit your mouth properly and may not provide the level of protection you need.
•  Boil and Bite. You can also find boil and bite mouthguards at most sporting goods stores. These mouthguards are boiled in water to soften them and then bitten into to provide a semi-custom fit. While they may be more comfortable than stock mouthguards, they still may not provide the optimal protection that you need.
•  Custom Fit. We provide custom fit mouthguards. We take an impression of your mouth, which allows us to design a protective device that gives you an accurate, comfortable fit. While custom mouthguards do cost more than other options, the protection that they provide is unmatched.

How Do I Care for My Mouthguard?

Taking care of your mouthguard is essential for ensuring that it continues to provide you with optimal protection. Rinse it off before and after each use. It can also be brushed with a toothbrush or cleaned with soap and water. When not in use, your mouthguard should be stored in a safe place in a hard case with vent holes. The holes provide air circulation, which prevents bacterial buildup. Do not leave your mouthguard exposed to high heat or direct sunlight. You should also inspect your mouthguard from time to time. At the first sign of damage, it should be replaced.

The Benefits of Mouthguards

A custom fit mouthguard provides you with several benefits.
•  It protects your teeth from damage.
•  It protects your jaw from fractures.
•  It prevents jaw dislocation.
•  It protects you from concussions.
•  By protecting your mouth, you prevent the need for invasive, expensive, dental procedures.

Whether you are involved in soccer, football, martial arts, or some other type of sport, wearing the proper protective gear is essential.
